Wonthaggi is known for its rich history as being the commercial centre of the Bass Coast. You can explore the town’s history at the State Coal Mine or enjoy the range of shops, restaurants and cafes on offer.
Between 1909 and 1968, black coal was mined from Wonthaggi’s network of underground mines, creating a thriving industrial settlement for miners and families during those years. The “Miners Cottages” were the bulk of homes built during this period, having high ceilings, pitched roofs and full of period style charm.
It has been popular in recent years for buyers to upgrade and extend these home and even subdivide the properties, however buyer demand has been also moving towards new luxury homes from one of the many on-going land developments in the growing suburb.
Wonthaggi and the suburbs of the Bass Coast offer a country-meets-coast lifestyle, with exciting growth both residentially and infrastructural, with four land developments in Wonthaggi underway, major Hospital expansion, upsized Bunnings and new Secondary Collage.
